Fun day last Saturday

Standard

We had great fun as around fifteen of us gathered at Yew Lane to weave willow plant supports and do various other garden jobs to prepare for the coming Spring. We will be holding more work days in the coming months as well as hopefully more willow weaving here at Yew Lane and at other places in Parson Cross.

The Willow Weaving was helped by artist Charlie Hill and funded by Community First (CDF) monies from Southey Panel.

Work Day & Willow Weaving Activity

Standard

You’re invited to join us for a work day (indoors and in the gardens) as Peter Hurley (PXI) and Charlie Hill work alongside local families and young people to create a new willow structure in the front garden. We’ll even put on some soup to share at lunchtime.

We’ll be meeting at Yew Lane from 10am, but feel free to join us when you can and for how long you can; we’ll be eating around 1pm. We’ve got all the equipment so you just need to come along – don’t forget to wrap up warm if you’re going to be outside. Ideally we’d like all children to be with an adult.

GodThink about God …..   what images come into mind?

How we see God is really important when it comes to  deepening our faith and relationship with God. Our first  Quiet Day of 2013 this Saturday (18th January) led by Rev Judith Jessop will help you to explore your image of God.

WEATHER WARNING:

As the forecast for this weekend is for significant amounts of snowfall it will be worth ringing Judith on Friday evening to check if the Quiet Day is running or not ….. she can be contacted on 0114 2313518

“…A time to build”

Standard

“There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
a time to kill and a time to heal,
a time to tear down and a time to build,

a time to weep and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn and a time to dance,
a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them,
a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing,
a time to search and a time to give up,
a time to keep and a time to throw away,
a time to tear and a time to mend,
a time to be silent and a time to speak,
a time to love and a time to hate,
a time for war and a time for peace.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

These words from Ecclesiastes remind us that in nature, and in life, things change, it talks about the seasons of change that are all too familiar to those of us who garden.

Photos from our garden work day on 17th November 2012

At Yew Lane the building season is entering an exciting new phase – as well as significant work in the front garden, we hope in the next year to also refurbish and upgrade the kitchen and begin work on developing a second and completely new activity room. But as well as this physical building work we’re also looking at new activities and new sessions to take us forward into 2013, these include:

  • Thursday afternoon Space to Grow gardening and cooking sessions.
  • “Movement Medicine” dance for women (hopefully to start in January 2013)
  • Songs for the Soul singing sessions (Next session: 30th November. 7-9pm)

In  all this we are looking to build a “family” – not of course one built on birth relationships and genetics, but one based on people wanting to be together, grow with each other; share, care, love and support for each other. We don’t imagine that all our family will be Christians, or even that they will be of any faith, we simply want to offer the opportunity to be part of it everyone who wants it ….. so if that’s you we’ll look forward to seeing you.

Songs of the Soul

Standard

Share in singing songs from a variety of sources, including the Taize and Iona Communities.

We will share in unaccompanied singing in four parts, enabling us to tune in to the joys and sorrows of life as we repeat the songs. The evening session will be led by Jill, Nick, Mark & Gill, who regularly sing these songs, and who led a session at Yew earlier this year. We will learn the songs by ear – so no musical experience is needed. The evening runs from 7pm until 9pm and is open to everyone (church goers and non church goers alike).

There is no charge and refreshments will be provided, for more information contact Judith on: 0114 231 3518

Space2Grow Sessions

Standard

Here’s the new Winter 2012-13 Space2Grow poster ….. as well as the Thursday afternoon sessions, we’ve got a garden “Working Day” on Saturday 17th November at Yew Lane – everyone is welcome to come and have a look around and help with planting the new raised beds. We’ll even provide snacks for lunch and plenty of drinks!
